How to get into watchmaking?

Posted on Sep 15, 2025

This is probably a stupid question but is it even possible to get into watch making as a hobby? I don't mean simply repairing watches but actually making them yourself. Even the movement. Is it possible with self-learning and without a big budget? I understand that it wouldn't be a weekend project but something that would take years to learn.

But if it's possible: how would I go about learning it? Would I need to gain experience repairing watches first? How would I gain the knowledge to be able to design own movements? Would the equipment needed to make watch parts be too expensive for a hobbyist? Would it be possible to have someone else make the movement one designed for just one watch for an affordable price?

If you want to learn watch assembly, you can choose one of the watchmaking schools in Switzerland, such as:

Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking School

Ecole des Métiers et Artisans de Haute Horlogerie

Institut Horlogerie Cartier

In these schools, you can receive systematic training and earn an internationally recognized certificate upon completing the program.

Of course, you can also choose to learn in a watch factory in China. Unlike schools, this allows you to understand the Chinese watch industry's supply chain, manufacturing capabilities, and gain hands-on experience. Many experienced craftsmen may also be willing to share their knowledge with you.

If you're interested, I can offer some assistance — for example, helping you connect with a factory for learning or internship opportunities, and providing free accommodation and translation support.
